| I have just received from my FFL a Remington Model 31 16ga Serial Number 575731. That I bought from Jaquas Fine Guns the gun is in very good condition no rust or pitting one small mark on the stock. I would say the gun is 95% or better. I will go to Remington with the S/N to find out what year it was manfactured. I have a question the gun has a poly-choke however the barrel is stamped mod. left side near the receiver. Can any of you 16ga members tell me if the poly-choke was installed by Remington or is it a after market installation. I have no plan to remove the poly-choke. The barrel only measures 26' could the barrel have been cut or come from Remington at 26'. It will be my PA. Grouse gun & small game. Ron |

| More than likely, it was installed aftermarket. I'd either shoot test the gun for point of impact or have a knowledgable gunsmith look at the barrel to ensure the polychoke was installed in line with the bore. Misaligned aftermarket adjustable chokes can and will skew the pattern and cause it to hit out of line with the centerline of the bore or rib. The good news is unless the adjustable choke is severely out of line, a botched installation can usually be realigned fairly easily so the barrel hits straight on again. PS, If the polychoke must be removed and you can still retain 24' of the original barrel, I'd not hesitate. A pump gun with a 24' tube makes a great grouse gun. It will still have enough OAL to handle much like a 26' or 28' O/U or SxS. A 16 with a cylinder choke is no big handicap either in a grouse coven. I've been using cylinder choke tubes in my O/U for this for a while now. One of my Ithaca 37s also sports a 24' factory barrel. The gun is well balanced and quick to the mark like any good upland gun should be. Good luck with your 31. |

| 16ga Members: Thanks for the info, I will pattern the gun. I sent a E-mail to info@remington.com with the gun S/N & questions I was informed I can expect a reply in 5-7 days. A reply to my post on (I love my Remington) by a member on SGW stated his Remington installed poly-choked barrel has no choke markings on the barrel. Ron |

Ron, You have a late last year gun probably Jan or Feb 1949 manufacture would be my guess. There is a three letter code on the left side of the barrel close to the receiver. If you post those three letters you can get the month and year your gun was made. I would doubt your Poly was installed by Remington as late of gun that it is; but it could have been. Some big firms (like Stoeger's) sold new guns with various chokes already installed as well. Usually a reputable installer will stamp his code numbers into the Poly saying his firm installed it. This is a good sign as they are usually straight shooters in my experience. Screw the sleeve completely off and look in the groove behind the threads. This is the usual stamp area. Remington 31's are GOOD guns! Enjoy it! Slidehammer |

Remington indicated the Model 31's were made from 1931 thru 1949 Ron |

| Just thought I would put a link to your post on Shotgun World regarding the fact that the rib and petals for the Polychoke were machined intregally with the barrel. http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=180973 | _________________ Long Ranger 16 Gauge Model 12, 30' Modified, circa 1937 16 Gauge Model 12, 26' Modified, circa 1940 16 Gauge Model 12, 26' Full, circa 1924 16 Gauge Model 1200, 26' IC, 28' Mod VR, circa 1966 Browning Sweet 16, 28' Modified VR, circa 1957 |
