I have just received from my FFL a Remington Model 31 16ga Serial Number 575731. That I bought from Jaquas Fine Guns the gun is in very good condition no rust or pitting one small mark on the stock. I would say the gun is 95% or better. I will go to Remington with the S/N to find out what year it was manfactured. I have a question the gun has a poly-choke however the barrel is stamped mod. left side near the receiver. Can any of you 16ga members tell me if the poly-choke was installed by Remington or is it a after market installation. I have no plan to remove the poly-choke. The barrel only measures 26' could the barrel have been cut or come from Remington at 26'. It will be my PA. Grouse gun & small game.

More than likely, it was installed aftermarket. I'd either shoot test the gun for point of impact or have a knowledgable gunsmith look at the barrel to ensure the polychoke was installed in line with the bore. Misaligned aftermarket adjustable chokes can and will skew the pattern and cause it to hit out of line with the centerline of the bore or rib. The good news is unless the adjustable choke is severely out of line, a botched installation can usually be realigned fairly easily so the barrel hits straight on again.
PS, If the polychoke must be removed and you can still retain 24' of the original barrel, I'd not hesitate. A pump gun with a 24' tube makes a great grouse gun. It will still have enough OAL to handle much like a 26' or 28' O/U or SxS. A 16 with a cylinder choke is no big handicap either in a grouse coven. I've been using cylinder choke tubes in my O/U for this for a while now. One of my Ithaca 37s also sports a 24' factory barrel. The gun is well balanced and quick to the mark like any good upland gun should be. Good luck with your 31.

16ga Members: Thanks for the info, I will pattern the gun. I sent a E-mail to info@remington.com with the gun S/N & questions I was informed I can expect a reply in 5-7 days. A reply to my post on (I love my Remington) by a member on SGW stated his Remington installed poly-choked barrel has no choke markings on the barrel.

ron, you may be able to determine the manufacture date from this table.

Ron,
You have a late last year gun probably Jan or Feb 1949 manufacture would be my guess. There is a three letter code on the left side of the barrel close to the receiver. If you post those three letters you can get the month and year your gun was made.
I would doubt your Poly was installed by Remington as late of gun that it is; but it could have been. Some big firms (like Stoeger's) sold new guns with various chokes already installed as well. Usually a reputable installer will stamp his code numbers into the Poly saying his firm installed it. This is a good sign as they are usually straight shooters in my experience. Screw the sleeve completely off and look in the groove behind the threads. This is the usual stamp area.
Remington 31's are GOOD guns! Enjoy it!

I have received a E-mail from Remington my Model 31 16ga was made in 1949. Very good condition for a 60 year old gun. The Poly-Choke was not installed by Remington. Remington indicated the Model 31's were made from 1931 thru 1949

Just thought I would put a link to your post on Shotgun World regarding the fact that the rib and petals for the Polychoke were machined intregally with the barrel.

Hello all,

commando movie download Contrary to another post the Remington Model 31 was made in a number of different grades and models. The following list is directly from the Remingtion website. Different grades and models will bring different values with the more rare grades and models obviously commanding higher prices. /ps3-adobe-flash-player-10-download.html. Thankfully, after 2001, Remington went back to having the serial numbers stamped on the barrel again. One thing that you might notice when you examine the chart above, the letters for the year code repeat themselves. This means that sometimes you will have to consider the specific model of Remington firearm that you have.

  • Here is some information that you can get from you serial number after 1921. I have been trying to find out what model and when this gun had.
  • Feb 5, 2007 - i have a model 31 remington 12 gauge that my grandfather bought new in. On the stock that say remington 12 guage) all the numbers match and there is. Just wondering what a mod 31 with a serial # 718 would be worth.

I have asked for input on this topic on several other boards w/o success, and was advised to check here; hopefully you can help me. I recently found a model 31-T with a four digit serial number 90xx, and what I think is a decent price, but before I grab it, I'd like to get some information on what these guys are supposed to look like. I'm also confused as to the difference (if any) between the T and the TC(the one in question is simply a '31-T'). The wood on the one I found has some very nice figure, and the checkering appears to be in good shape as well. There is a very old, somewhat over-sized orange recoil pad w/ a black spacer on the butt, which I assumed was added later, and where the stock meets the back of the receiver, it appears that the receiver is 'proud' of the stock on the top--as if the stock had slide down a mm or two where it meets the receiver. The stock shows no evidence of sanding or recutting of the checkering, and the over-all appearance is of an honest, well-used trap gun. Can you advise what a 'correct' early 31-T is supposed to look like?
